The semi-final of Diageo Ireland’s World Class Cocktail Competition, held at the historic Cork City Gaol recently, marked a significant milestone for the renowned event. For the first time in its history, the competition ventured beyond Dublin’s borders, embracing Cork’s vibrant culture and showcasing the city’s rich culinary and artistic heritage.
Eight of Ireland’s most talented mixologists converged in a thrilling battle of creativity and skill, each vying for a coveted spot in the finals of World Class Ireland. With only four slots available, the competition was fierce as competitors pushed the boundaries of mixology innovation.
On the day, the contestants took part in two challenges; “The Lemonade Stand Challenge” and “The Best of Cork Mystery Box Challenge” while guests were served up some delicious cocktails from our pop-up bar. The World Class programme aims to support the bar trade as well as train and inspire the bartending community.
This gave Adeline Valdivia, from the incredible Allta Bar and Restaurant, Dublin, and a finalist of World Class Ireland 2023, the opportunity to manage the pop-up bar on the day of the 2024 semi-finals. Adeline curated an incredible cocktail menu specifically for the day using Don Julio Tequila, Ketel One Vodka, Roe & Co Whiskey, and Tanqueray 0.0.
What set this year’s semi-final apart was its celebration of Cork’s local flair. Organisers spared no effort in sourcing ingredients exclusively from Cork’s finest food producers, highlighting the region’s exceptional culinary offerings. Additionally, the event provided a platform for local Cork artists, each contestant was paired with an artist to create pieces specifically for the occasion. These pieces were displayed throughout the venue on the day, adding an extra layer of cultural richness to the competition.
“The semi-final in Cork City Gaol was a resounding success, underscoring the depth of talent and creativity within Ireland’s mixology scene,” said Cal Byrne, Head of Advocacy and World Class at Diageo Ireland. “We were thrilled to see the fusion of world-class cocktails with Cork’s unique flavors and artistic expression. It truly exemplified the spirit of innovation and collaboration that defines the World Class competition. Now onto the finals in Dublin!”.
The semi-final saw 4 out of the 8 semi-finalists through to the finals of this year’s competition. The finalists include Emily Doherty, The Merchant Belfast; Darren Geraghty, Hawksmoor Dublin; Akram Bendjeddou, Paladar Cork; Chihiro Nakamura, RÉ Nao Galway.
The journey to the finals of World Class Ireland continues for the remaining contestants, who will undoubtedly carry with them the inspiration and experiences gained from the semi-final in Cork. As they prepare to showcase their skills on the national stage, the anticipation builds for what promises to be an unforgettable final.
