Cork based disability charity to host Recruitment Open Day later this month
Horizons, a leading disability charity based in Cork, is hosting a Recruitment Open Day as it looks to hire Care Assistants, Staff Nurses, and Social Care Workers. The Recruitment Open Day will take place at the Metropole Hotel in Cork City on Wednesday, July 30th from 1.30pm to 6.30pm.
Individuals seeking a new career will have the opportunity to meet current team members and learn about available roles within the organisation which is dedicated to empowering people with disabilities to live full and independent lives.
Benóg Brady Bates has been supported by staff at Horizons for the past 15 years and is now living in his own home.
Benóg said: “It’s taken some time for me to get to this point, I have lived at home, and I have lived with other people. All these experiences brought me to where I am today. I learned what I like and don’t like, but overall, I learned so much about myself as a person.
What I enjoy most about living on my own is I have freedom to do what I want. I enjoy getting out and about, travelling and exploring new places. There are so many goals I want to achieve. What I have learned throughout this process is that you must stand up and push for what you want. If you don’t, you won’t get to where you want to be.”
Benóg’s mother, Mary Brady Bates added, “Staff from across various areas of the organisation supported Benóg on his journey to independence. Everyone from Care Assistants, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists and more, all played a part and walked alongside him. The whole process was new; it was a pilot programme and there was a lot of learning. Benóg’s family don’t live in Cork, so it was key from the outset that he had a strong support network around him. It’s probably now, more than ever, that Benóg needs staff to support him from a social aspect.
I think it’s so important for staff to be adaptable, empathetic and respectful of the person’s choices and goals. There’s no doubt that working in the disability sector is challenging with lots of barriers to face, but the results can be so rewarding. For Benóg, he now has a space of his own. A home is your castle and it reflects who you are as a person. Benóg’s personality shines through his apartment, he has carved out a life of his own and I couldn’t be happier or prouder of him.”
Molly O’Keeffe, Horizon’s Project Lead for De-congregation, said: “Horizons is currently recruiting passionate, curious, empathetic people who are keen to join dynamic and purpose-driven teams. These support roles will suit individuals who are keen to walk alongside people with intellectual disabilities to live ordinary lives within their chosen community.”
Speaking about Benóg’s journey to independent living, Ms O’Keeffe added: “Various departments within Horizons received the opportunity to work in partnership with Benóg and his family as he grew in confidence and life skills. Horizons’ social workers supported Benóg to apply for social housing, enabling a positive partnership with Cork City Council leading to his signing his tenancy and moving into his own home. The organisation continues to partner with Benóg and his family as he plans for his future.”
Horizons is guided by the United Nations on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and this support is in line with Article 19 of UNCRPD.
