The latest winner of the Talbot Collection Cork Community, Business and Sports Awards is the St. Mary’s High School Equestrian Team.
The Awards Scheme is sponsored by Talbot Collection Cork along with Award Sponsors AIB Midleton & Ballincollig and Media Partners RedFM.
The St. Marys High School, Midleton Equestrian team has achieved phenomenal success in the last three years eclipsing all other schools in Munster and in Southern part of Ireland by winning on every single major school competition in show jumping.
In February 2016, St. Marys won the Ballyrafter inter-schools competition in Lismore, Co. Waterford. The winning team consisted of Aoife Bernard, Orla Fleming and Chloe Joyce. In addition, Chloe Joyce came first in the individual competition, making it an outstanding double for the school. In 2016, they took an unpreceded 1st and 2nd place in the Maryville inter-schools tournament. The winning team was Orla Fleming, Chloe Joyce, Laura Murphy and Sarah Rohan. The second place team were Aoife Bernard, Alannah Budds and Sarah Rohan. This was a remarkable one-two.
In February 2017, St Marys once again won the Ballyrafter inter-schools tournament, making it back- to- back wins over the two consecutive years. The winning combinations were Aoife Bernard, Orla Fleming, Chloe Joyce and Sarah Rohan. As happened in the previous years, Chloe Joyce once again took first place spot in the individual competition, making it a double- double for St. Marys!
In November 2017, the West Cork inter-schools Show jumping tournament was held in Bandon. A total of 12 schools took part in this event. Once again, St. Marys took first place; the team consisted of Anna Brenner, Chloe Joyce, Alannah O’Shea and Sarah Rohan. In addition, Chloe Joyce and Sarah Rohan came 2nd and 3rd respectively in the individual competition.
This equestrian brilliance is unparalleled and has never been matched by any other school in Southern Ireland.
A past equestrian student of St. Mary’s High School Midleton, Jody Townend, (sister of former Champion Jockey Paul Townend) has had 4 winners at point to points already, including in a maiden hurdle at Tramore last week.
