A major fundraising drive has been officially launched by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Councillor John Sheehan and Cork Olympic and World Championship legend, Rob Heffernan to raise in excess of €60,000 for three well-known Cork charities – CUH Charity Cork University Hospital, Marymount Hospice and Cork Simon Community.
During June and July individuals, families, businesses, sporting organisations and communities are being asked to take on the “Cork Camino Challenge” to help raise much needed funds. Thousands of people head to Spain every year to walk some, or all, of the Camino de Santiago to fulfil a personal ambition. If you’ve ever wanted to walk the Camino, then now is your chance! People are being asked to walk, run or cycle the equivalent of the 110km “Camino Ingles” between Monday June 1st and Friday 31st July around Cork City and County.
Speaking at the launch, Lord Mayor, Councillor John Sheehan said: “I’m delighted to support the efforts of Caring for Cork. These three local charities are supporting both frontline workers and people living on the fringes of society. I have no doubt that the people of Cork will rise to this challenge.”
Olympic and World Champion, Rob Heffernan is encouraging everyone to get involved: “The people of Cork have always been generous and creative. In spite of the current physical distancing and travel restrictions, I know that they will get fully behind the fundraising drive.”
William O’Brien, Chairman, Caring for Cork said: “During this unprecedented time of Covid-19, charities have been severely hit as a result of their inability to host their usual fundraising events, at a time when there is a greater demand for their services than ever before. These organisations do a wonderful job in supporting the sick and the marginalised in our society and the Cork Camino Challenge gives us all an opportunity to show our appreciation and our gratitude for the work they do.”
Each individual that takes part will set a personal target of raising €50 as a minimum, while clubs, teams and businesses are encouraged to raise a minimum of €500. Every euro counts and every euro is vital to support the services provided by these three local charities. Participants are also being encouraged to post photos of themselves on social media using the hashtag #CaringForCork.”
