Today 140 colleagues from Pfizer Ireland’s 3,700 strong employee network will set off on a 275km cycle, starting from the Grange Castle site in Dublin this morning and finishing tomorrow in Pfizer’s Ringaskiddy site. The purpose of the cycle is to raise awareness of blood cancer and raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society.
John Sourke, Site Lead, Pfizer Grange Castle who is also taking part in the cycle commented; “This initiative for the Irish Cancer Society is very much colleague led and it is particularly pleasing to have colleagues from across all of our sites taking part. It is also a very personal initiative as a number of our colleagues are affected by blood cancer and we want to do our utmost to raise awareness and funds.”
“We have been training over the last couple of months as it will be a real test of resilience. We will start our journey at Pfizer Grange Castle and will move towards Kilkenny passing through Newcastle, Naas, stopping off at Pfizer Newbridge site before moving on through Kilcullen, Athy, Castlecomer and into Kilkenny. Day two will then see us progress through Clonmel, Lismore, Tallow, Middleton and Ringaskiddy, finishing up at the Pfizer Ringaskiddy site, covering 275 Kilometres in total.”
Mark Mellett, Head of Fundraising, Irish Cancer Society said: “We are delighted that Pfizer and its employees have chosen to support Blood Cancer treatment and research by undertaking a 285km fundraising cycle from the Pfizer plant in Grange Castle to Pfizer Ringaskiddy. Every day in Ireland, one hundred and fifty people get a cancer diagnosis. We know the life changing impact that diagnosis can have on the lives of people and their families.
That’s why our Cancer Services are there to provide care and support to cancer patients when they need it most. But without support from companies like Pfizer and the public, we simply can’t help everyone. We saw a growing number of cancer patients reach out to us for support last year. With the help of companies like Pfizer we are determined to keep up with this demand but to do this we need to raise more money. Thanks to the team at Pfizer for this great support and we wish them every success and safe cycling.”
