Cork Midsummer Festival has launched an open call for the inaugural Jane Anne Rothwell Award after one of its most successful editions of the Festival.
The Jane Anne Rothwell Award will see a prize of €5,000 awarded annually to an emerging artist — either from Cork, or based in Cork — working in any discipline, who identifies as female.
Jane Anne Rothwell was the inspirational Chair of Cork Midsummer Festival from 2013 – 2018. A leading figure in Cork’s legal and business community, Jane Anne was an incredible mentor to, and champion of, women in the arts.
The award will support bold and innovative projects that respond to the city of Cork — whether that involves traditional arts venues, surprising site-specific locations, diverse communities, the city’s history, geography, politics, or its people.
The successful applicant will be awarded €5,000 to realise an event as part of the 2020 Cork Midsummer Festival. The applicant will be selected by a panel consisting of Lorraine Maye, Director, Cork Midsummer Festival; Kris Nelson, Artistic Director, LIFT; and Olga Barry, Festival Director, Kilkenny Arts Festival.
The open call deadline is Wednesday, 31 July, and the 25th edition of Cork Midsummer Festival takes place from June 12 – 21 2020.
Applicants should submit a short cover letter including personal details and statement of intent, why this award would be useful at this stage of their career and a brief outline of their proposed project (max 500 words). A preliminary budget must also be submitted, a current CV (two A4 pages maximum) and links to up to three examples of previous work. All relevant documentation should be compiled into a single attachment in word doc or pdf format and emailed to info@corkmidsummer.com with ‘Jane Anne Rothwell Award’ in the subject line.
Lorraine Maye, Director, Cork Midsummer Festival said:
“This is an opportunity for an artist at an early stage of their career to present something that may be small in scale but large in intent as part of the 25th edition of the Cork Midsummer Festival. The Festival is committed to supporting and platforming the work of emerging artists. We are so proud to announce this award in honour of Jane Anne Rothwell, an extraordinary champion of the arts.”
