ADHD Ireland is hosting an event in Cork dedicated to exploring and showcasing the unique creativity that is often associated with ADHD. ‘ADHD and the Arts’ takes place on Thursday, April 4th at the Triskel Arts Centre.
ADHD, which stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is a neurodevelopmental difference affecting approximately 5% of the population. It can lead to challenges in organisation, focus and self-regulation. ADHD Ireland’s mission is to make life better for people with ADHD through support, education and promoting awareness. The upcoming event at The Triskel Arts Centre aims to celebrate the creativity, diversity, and the profound impact of ADHD on artistic expression.
The evening will see three creatives working within the arts, who will discuss their own experience of ADHD and how it has influenced their artistic journeys: Charles Neilson aka ZootGhost is a globally recognised artist and illustrator who has illuminated city streets from Singapore to New York City; Louise Barry is a highly accomplished youth mentor, author and singer-songwriter who trained at the prestigious Paul McCartney School in London, and Sean Downey is a hugely talented and prolific videographer who uses his camera to amplify the voices of marginalised communities, and has created music videos for the United Nations. Each artist will be interviewed by Cork journalist Mike McGrath Bryan (The Examiner).
Cork ADHD Ireland Service Development Manager, Martin Finn, is glad of the opportunity to offer an insight into some lesser-known characteristics and opportunities of ADHD: “People with ADHD are confronted with many challenges as they navigate a primarily neurotypical world. However, ADHD mind mechanisms can also be harnessed for exceptional creativity. We are excited to spotlight the positive aspects of ADHD, emphasising its unique connection to creativity while exploring the transformative power of art in the lives of those with ADHD. I hope that attendees will gain a new perspective on ADHD through witnessing the artists showcase and discuss their art.”
