Dietician tells runners to get nutrition right now in countdown to Cork City Marathon
Runners who are taking part in the Cork City Marathon 2023 are advised to make their nutrition plan part of their training programme now rather than closer to the time.
Daniel Murphy, who owns Apex Nutrition, said the biggest mistake people make is leaving it too late to prepare their marathon nutrition.
“Those preparing for the marathon need to be mindful of their nutrition and incorporate it into their training programme. It takes time and a lot of practice to get it right. People have very busy lives with work and family commitments and it can be difficult to fit in the correct amount of meals so it’s important to plan everything out.”
Registration is now open for the Cork City Marathon, which takes place on Sunday, 4th June 2023. Those who have begun their training or who are planning to start are being reminded of the importance of fuelling the body.
Daniel says carbohydrates provide runners with most of their fuel and it is extremely important to make carbohydrates a key component of your daily diet plan, especially before a long run. Protein is also an essential part of a runners’ diet as it helps the body recover afterwards.
“Your last 30g of carbs in the body could make all the difference to your finish time,” according to Daniel. “Calories are fuel and fuel demands are super high in running long distances. As a runner you will be trying to get the best out of your performance on the day so I would recommend that you focus on that rather than weight loss.”
Daniel was speaking during a live webinar hosted by organisers of the Cork City Marathon, Davis Events Agency. He also spoke of the importance of getting to know the marathon route beforehand, including where the water and isotonic stations will be located. He said that staying hydrated is vital on the day and knowing how much water and gels you need and when to take them will make a huge difference.
