Cork City Council has installed over 40 Christmas trees this year, all peppered around the city centre and suburbs to celebrate its brightest Christmas yet!
St Patrick’s Street has seen an increase of 5,000 lights – we now have 60,000 lights twinkling across the city. While Glow – A Cork Christmas Celebration will shine bright with 40,150 LED lights, falling tubes, decorative globes, stars and snowflakes all creating another magical glow.
Glow is a significant occasion in the Cork City’s Christmas calendar. The Lord Mayor Councillor Mick Finn will perform the switch on of the Lough’s Christmas crib display at 7pm. This promises to be a fantastic evening with entertainment from the local Maria Assumpta School Choir, circus performers, and donkeys from the Liscarroll Donkey Sanctuary will make an appearance to add to the festive spirit.
Since early November, six Cork City Council staff members and a crew of 17 electricians have been in charge of lighting the streets of Cork and 40 trees with low wattage energy efficient LED lighting. In total, 5.5 kilometres of lights have been strung around Christmas trees in Cork City and suburbs for the Christmas period.
Cork City Council is committed to decorating in an energy efficient manner; all lighting in Cork City is now low wattage energy efficient LED lighting.
Lord Mayor Mick Finn said: “The Christmas lights are part and parcel of Cork’s festive season and really brighten up the city and get people in the mood. I am hopeful that further investment in lighting systems can be found for next year. The various trees dotted around the city are fantastic too and the Crib at the Lough is iconic. By switching on the lights around Cork, we are switching on the season.”
Last Friday also saw the start of the Christmas season with 1,100 people in attendance for the sold-out fifty-eighth Lord Mayor’s Christmas Concert.
Glow – A Cork Christmas Celebration returned to Grand Parade last Friday and will be running each weekend leading up to Christmas. For a full list of dates please visit glowcork.ie. During these dates Bishop Lucey Park will be open from 4:30pm to 8:30pm, the Christmas Food Markets on the Grand Parade will be open from 12pm to 8:30pm. The Ferris Wheel will be open from 12pm to 9pm, November 30 to January 6.
