The Network Ireland West Cork September event entitled Hunger and Passion – Talk and Tour – Arts in West Cork took place recently at Uillinn: West Cork Arts Centre, Skibbereen, Cork. The event consisted of a brief tour of the stellar Summer exhibition, Art and the Great Hunger: Coming Home, followed by a seminar with keynote speaker Ann Davoren, director at West Cork Arts Centre, curator, chairperson of the Skibbereen Community Project and member of the BA (hons) Visual Art degree programme management group.
Ann Davoren is an advocate for the visual arts in West Cork, with over 25 years professional experience in arts management and proficiency in community-based art projects. At the Network Ireland West Cork event, Ann gave a background on how the Coming Home: Art and the Great Hunger exhibition came to Uillinn: West Cork Arts Centre. “It is one of only three venues on the Island of Ireland showing this unique tour. It features works about the Irish Famine, ranging from paintings made in the 1800s to contemporary multimedia artworks.” She continued by discussing the development of Uillinn, a purpose-built arts facility in the heart of Skibbereen, which opened to the public in 2015, the year of the West Cork Arts Centre’s thirtieth birthday. “Uillinn provides access to, and engagement with, the arts for the people of West Cork,” concluded Ann.
Speaking at the event, Adrienne Harrington, President of Network Ireland West Cork, said: “The variety of venues and speakers on offer in West Cork is second to none and gives Network Ireland West Cork members a unique opportunity and experience every month. Uillinn: West Cork Arts Centre is central to the West Cork arts scene and is a creative space showcasing widespread talent. It adds to the pride felt by people in West Cork.”
