Whiskey connoisseurs rejoice as there’s an innovative new whiskey on the market that looks set to become the nation’s firm favourite. Natterjack Irish Whiskey was created by Irish entrepreneur, Aidan Mehigan and utilises both Irish and American techniques to create a truly unique tasting product.
Smelling the golden vibrant liquid, Natterjack has an upfront bouquet of vanilla, apple and cinnamon. The taste invokes a smooth, almost creamy palate of orange, orange zest, spice, cedar and notes of tobacco. The whiskey is triple distilled in true Irish spirit and carefully crafted using Irish and American techniques. Natterjack starts ageing in ex-bourbon barrels (traditional Irish) and is finished in virgin American oak (traditional American), before bottling it to capture a unique Irish whiskey, wonderful to enjoy neat and versatile enough to make an amazing cocktail – ideal for a relaxing night in this weekend!
The company’s success story is a testament to the expression “fortune favours the bold” as entrepreneur Aidan Mehigan took the calculated risk to leave a secure job to build as he says, “something from nothing”. Mehigan moved back to Ireland with the dream of setting up Gortinore Distillers & Co. He and his five co-founders are committed to maintaining the company’s ethos of “doing things differently”.
With the backing from these five private investors, which include two of Aidan’s closest friends and his father, Denis, the team have purchased an old Flahavan’s Oats Mill in Co. Waterford with plans underway for a full repair and restoration of the original 1920’s establishment. From there, Aidan and his co-founders certainly don’t plan on resting on their laurels. Once complete, the distillery will house three traditional copper pot stills and ageing whiskey casks, employing up to 15 people. Next, they plan on creating a visitor centre that will “capture imaginations and let whiskey enthusiasts and novices alike experience first-hand the methods through which real Irish whiskey has been created for generations.”
