The Lord Mayor Cllr Tony Fitzgerald will today officially open the City’s first outdoor gym at Fairfield Park.( Fairfield Road/Upper Fairhill) The gym was funded by Healthy Ireland Fund, Cork City Council and the HSE.
The gym consisting of 15 items of equipment is fully inclusive and suitable for people of all abilities. The equipment includes a rower unit, cross trainers, chest presses, chin up bars, bicycle and lat pull down. The free facility will be open during normal park opening hours which are generally 9 am to dusk throughout the year. Construction was managed by Cork City Council Parks Department.
The City Council Sports Unit, together with Cork Sports Partnership, the HSE and local community groups will provide ongoing support and mentoring programmes to encourage maximum usage of the gym.

Additional outdoor gyms will be rolled out to other City parks over the next year or so both designed to upgrade the recreational opportunities in the parks and also to encourage greater participation in physical activity.
Fairfield Park at Fairhill is already a very popular amenity for walkers and also is home to four soccer clubs.
At the opening the Lord Mayor Cllr Tony Fitzgerald, performing his last public function and who represents the area stated “ that he was delighted to see such a great addition to the Park and that it was in keeping with the Cork Healthy City Strategy with which he was involved”
