The Julie O’Neill Annual Ring of Kerry Golf Classic, now in its fourth year, will take place from September 14 to 16 at the Kenmare Golf Club. The event each year raises significant, essential funds for the Respiratory and Cystic Fibrosis Units at Cork University Hospital.
The Golf Classic is being organised by Julie O’Neill, her husband Michael and their children Annie and Joe O’Neill, from Castletownbere, Cork, to thank Professor Barry Plant and his team at CUH by raising funds for their units within the hospital.
In 2014, Julie O’Neill’s life was saved by Professor Plant and his medical team at CUH, when she suffered an extreme allergic reaction to the spores in hay and was diagnosed with what is commonly known as ‘farmers’ lung’. Miraculously, Julie survived.
Speaking about the upcoming Golf Classic event, Julie said: “Professor Plant and all his team saved my life, and for that I am forever grateful. Organising this event is our way of giving back to all the great people who took me in their arms and brought me through this terrifying time in my life. The yearly support of our family, friends and supporters of our fundraising initiative is heart-warming and very much appreciated.”
A host of local businesses from Kenmare and Beara Peninsula, each year donate raffle prizes and sponsor tee boxes in recognition of the importance of CUH to the Munster region. The event’s main sponsor is Derek McCarthy Family Butchers, Hawkes Road, Bishopstown.
Speaking about Julie’s fundraising for CUH, Shane Falvey, Fundraising & Communications Executive, CUH Charity, said: “Working with grateful patients, such as Julie, is one of the best aspects of our work in CUH Charity. Hearing individual motivations for making a difference to current and future patients’ lives is truly inspirational. We wish Julie and her supporters the very best of luck with this Golf Classic and already look forward to its fifth year, next year.”
