Cork City Council, in partnership with Women for Election, will welcome Ireland’s first ever elected black female public representative, Councillor Yemi Adenuga to City Hall next week where she will set out what tools are needed by women considering running for election.
Cllr Adenuga – a well respected trainer in this area – will be at City Hall on Friday May 5 from 2-5pm as part of a free bespoke event entitled ‘Women Belong’ which is supported by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
Part of the ‘More Women for Election in Cork’ programme, this ‘Women Belong’ event is designed to equip females with the confidence, support, and tools to get involved in local politics, support other women in their political life, and perhaps put themselves forward for the 2024 Local Elections.
Councillor Yemi Adenuga is Ireland’s first ever elected black female public representative and Meath County Council’s first migrant councillor.
CEO of Women for Election Caitriona Gleeson said: “It really is wonderful to have councils facilitate possible future candidates inside their chambers for training. Women Belong gives attendees the first-hand experience of what it feels like to sit in the decision-making seat! We are on the last stretch to the next local elections, a pivotal year to get as many women involved and running as candidates. With 75% of council seats occupied by men we cannot afford to let this opportunity pass us by for another 5 years. We must have more women at our decision-making tables to ensure an accurately representative democracy. That’s why programmes like this in partnership with Cork City Council are so important.”
